When I first started Zelda’s Cookies, I focused solely on baking delicious, natural cookies for dogs. But as I learned more about canine health, I realized there was another way I could help -dental chews.
Dental health plays a big role in a dog’s overall well-being, and regular chewing supports clean teeth and fresh breath. But when I looked at the ingredient lists on store-bought dental chews, I found long lists of things I couldn’t even pronounce. That’s when I set out to create my own – a natural, tasty dental chew that dogs would love and with ingredients that pet parents could trust.
It took three months of experimenting to get it just right. The flavors and nutrition were the easy part:
- Apples are a low-calorie sweet treat, as well as a great source of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, antioxidants, and fiber.
- Carrots are also low in calories, provide vitamin A, and are a great chew treat on their own.
- Coconut oil, infused with spearmint, added even more health benefits. Spearmint is rich in antioxidants and contains vitamin A and other nutrients as well as being a natural breath freshener. I could harvest spearmint from my own garden, too!
- Chia seeds, packed with vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids, helped create the right texture when mixed with liquid.
- Cinnamon, already a staple in my cookies, brought more nutrition and great taste. In small amounts, it can help regulate blood sugar levels and improve brain function.

The real challenge was crafting a chew that actually helped clean teeth. A veterinary friend told me that an effective dental chew should take at least 30 seconds to eat and be the right size for the dog. Through trial and error—plus some enthusiastic canine taste-testers—I discovered that dehydrating the chews gave them the perfect consistency to promote dental health.

After all that work, I’m excited to offer an all-natural, healthy, and delicious way to support your dog’s dental care.
